Memecoin economies

Hi!

Welcome to Web3 Bits, where I share a few of the most interesting web3 bits for you to consumer over the weekend.

I've recently started sharing my investment journey (equities and crypto) on Substack, it's different, yet similar, to how I look at tokenomics. If investments and portfolio management interest you - you're welcome to read along here.

I'm also adding a new corner to the web3 weekend bits: Frens corner! I'll be adding in an interesting snippet, article, podcast or piece of content from one of you. If you want something added next week, just reply.

Writings

  • Memecoin economies: As the recent craze on memecoin has peaked I wanted to share how to value memecoins. Are they memes or more than that?
  • How I conduct an investment checklist before buying anything.

Interesting things

  • Ethereum governance came into the spotlight recently as EIP 3074 got approved. Many folks are happy about this as 3074 promises to bring a version of account abstraction which can enable much better UX. Here's a good summary of the EIP. Lots of developers are in favor. A few security researchers are against, since now your wallet can be drained with one click. Additionally, it shifts focus away from other important EIPs - such as inclusion lists, which prevents censorship (some claim EIP-3074 actually prevents inclusion lists from being implemented later on) and EIP-4337, which is the full on account abstraction EIP. Is this good or bad? I'm not sure. What's clear is that protocol governance is hard.
  • Ethereum governance has always been interesting, which is why I enjoyed this podcast where Christene Kim discusses the All Core Dev calls where decisions like which EIP to implement are discussed. She also publishes summaries of each call - a great resource.

Resources

  • Multicoin Summit talks from October 2023. 7 months old but good to rehash and revisit for themes in crypto.

Frens corner

  • Nick from Tellor is back with a great breakdown of protocols on his YouTube channel. His video breakdowns are a must watch.

Hi! Welcome to Web3 Bits, where I share a few of the most interesting web3 bits for you to consumer over the weekend. This week I decided to dive into a new cool tokenomics model I've been having lots of fun with on Farcaster for the past month: $DEGEN. It's got a lot more going for it than just being a meme coin and good vibes. The team has implemented a few cool and simple mechanics that have really made things click. One of my key questions though are: is this sustainable and what needs to...

Hi! Welcome to Web3 Bits, where I share a few of the most interesting web3 bits for you to consumer over the weekend. It's been a good six months since my last missive. The bull is back! In September last year I wrote about why I'm getting more bullish which turned out to be fairly prescient: Outside money...
